With her remarkable debut Yellow Paint , 17-year-old Oria Aspen bursts onto the scene and proves she is a musical force to be reckoned with for many years to come. A collection of 13 original songs all written by Oria, plus one cover, Yellow Paint is her deeply personal journey through every day life, which is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever had to navigate the rocky road to adulthood. Sometimes sassy, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes raucous, but always passionate, Yellow Paint conveys the hopes, fears, frustrations and joys that we all experience. With Yellow Paint, Oria has managed not only to paint a picture of her world, but has invited us be a part of it.
Her musical talent should come as no surprise – the daughter of acclaimed jazz/blues/rock guitarist Glenn Alexander, Oria was raised on a steady diet of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and James Brown. She was writing her own songs by the time she was five and singing at her father’s jazz performances at age eight. An accomplished flutist, Oria also plays piano. By age 13, she was incorporating her love of jazz and blues into the pop songs she was meticulously crafting. The result: Yellow Paint – a stark, honest, surprisingly mature, portrait of a young woman trying to find her place in the world.
A labor of love three years in the making, there really is something for everyone on Yellow Paint, as Oria has written straight-up pop/rock songs like the first single, “Be My Rock Star,” as well as, “Burn Up In The Flames,” “It’s You” and the title track, “Yellow Paint;” some punk vibes like “Party Song;” the beautiful ballad “Over The Rainbow;” a defiant soul/rap groove called “Get Back;” gorgeous, heartfelt songs such as “Lucky To Be Me” and “Last Song;” as well darker ballads like, “Scars,” “M3NT@L” and “Forbidden Love.” Also included on the CD: Oria’s duet with legendary New Jersey soul man and rocker, Southside Johnny, with their interpretation of the Louis Armstrong classic, “What A Wonderful World.” Yellow Paint not only showcases Oria’s impressive vocal ability and masterful flute skills, but also reveals her exceptional songwriting talent.
Most songs were recorded in New York and New Jersey and feature some of the East Coast’s most talented and acclaimed musicians, including: session ace and multi- reed man, Bob Magnuson; world-renowned drummers Shawn Pelton (who has worked with Shakira, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin) and Van Romaine (Enrique Iglesias, Naughty By Nature, Deep Purple, Steve Morse); The Asbury Jukes’ Jeff Kazee (keyboards), The General (guitar), John Conte (bass), Chris Anderson (trumpet) and Neal Pawley (trombone); Conan O’Brien’s keyboard wizard Scott “Hollywood” Healy; producer and keyboard extraordinaire Michael Mancini ; as well as Nashville’s top session aces Mike Durham, Tony Harrell, Greg Morrow and Steve Mackey. The production and lush arrangements of Yellow Paint are courtesy of Oria’s musical partner and guitarist, The General.
